Baptism

Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the Sacrament which initiates us into the Sacramental life of the Church; thus, Baptism is received before any other Sacrament.

Being too young to speak for themselves, children baptized before the age of reason (age 7) are entrusted to the parents and godparents to be brought up in the ways of Jesus Christ and His Church. Because of this responsibility, parents are required to attend a preparatory session on raising a child in the Catholic faith before having their baby baptized.

Here at St. Mary's, a two hour preparatory session for parents is required for new parents and for those who have not attended a preparatory session within the last three years. A preparatory session is usually scheduled once every two months on Sunday afternoon, but sometimes, at the discretion of the instructor, an additional preparatory session may be scheduled when there is a large demand.

The Sacrament of Baptism for children is usually scheduled for the second Sunday of the month at 2:00 P.M. and on the fourth Sunday of the month during the 12:30 P.M.  Other times are available by request when approved by the Pastor.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

(R.C.I.A)

For those who have an interest in the Roman Catholic Church, the R.C.I.A. is a process to help one discern if he/she is being called to become a Roman Catholic.  The ritual, prayer, meditation, and learning of the R.C.I.A. helps one to grow in his/her knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and His Church, established from the time of the Apostles. Each week we gather to retell and share the story and journey of our faith. Our sessions include: prayer, teaching, community sharing, and service. We meet on Wednesdays from September through Pentecost, but you may begin any time.

If one has never been baptized, he/she prepares to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, the night before Easter Day.

If one has been baptized in another Christian Faith, he/she will be prepared to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church are prepared in separate process of R.C.I.A. adapted for Children which meets on Mondays from September through Pentecost.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Adapted for Children

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
Adapted for Children

For children in second to eighth grades, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Adapted for Children (RCIAc) offers a program of classes and formation.  Since the children are old enough to speak for themselves, they need some basic preparation at an age appropriate level before entering the Catholic Church.  These children usually receive Baptism and First Communion together, but Confirmation is delayed until the Archbishop of Omaha or his designate offers this Sacrament during eighth grade.

High School age youth can be placed
either with the children or the adults
on a case by case basis.

The Marriage Preparation Process

Step One: Contact St. Mary's, choose a wedding date, and meet with the priest who will facilitate marriage preparation and/or witness your wedding vows

Step Two: Attend a Marriage Preparation "Welcome Session" as scheduled by the Archdiocese of Omaha.  This is a two hour session where couples complete the FOCCUS inventory and   gives an overview of the marriage preparation process and educational programs.  Contact the facilitator of the FOCCUS review after attending the Welcome Session.

Step Three: Complete the FOCCUS facilitation process with the priest or other certified FOCCUS facilitator.  The purpose of the FOCCUS review is to help the individual couple discuss the issues relative to their relationship.  The review of the FOCCUS usually takes about eight hour-long sessions to complete, depending on the issues that need to be discussed.

Step Four: Attend an Educational Program as scheduled by the Archdiocese of Omaha. The purpose of the Educational Program is to have have married witnesses who have applied the skills discussed in the FOCCUS instrument in a practical way.  You may choose from the Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend, the one day, large group "Marriage: a Journey for Life" session, or the six session small group "Marriage for Life" Session.  At St. Mary's, we have several couples trained to lead the small group "Marriage for Life" and those preparing at St. Mary's, Bellevue have the priority for these sessions.

Other Sessions for those with particular situations include the "Remarriage Program" for those couples in which one or both of the parties have been married before and the "Convalidation Program" for those married outside the Catholic Church and are seeking Church recognition of their marriage.

Step Five: Attend the "Natural Family Planning Introductory Session" as directed by the priest in charge of your wedding preparation.  This is a one time session to introduce the couple to the methods and science or Natural Family Planning.

Step Six: Plan your wedding liturgy with our wedding facilitator, Jacque Kallman, using Marriage: a Journey for Life liturgy resource.  At this session, the couple will discuss and select Prayers, Scripture Readings, and appropriate Music.  The procession of family members and sedding party will also be discussed.  Helpful liturgy planning information is also available at www.foryourmarriage.org.

Further Information is available from the
