Mission Statement

Our general mission is an extension of the four-fold mission of the Catholic Church:

St. Mary's Catholic School is a Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth grade school of the Archdiocese of Omaha.

We exist to assist parents, the primary educators of their children, in educating and nurturing students to use their unique gifts for becoming responsible, community-minded adults.

-to proclaim the message of faith
-to foster community
-to encourage worship and prayer
-to motivate the service of others

Our philosophy of education is to offer a five day program to assist families in teaching those truths, skills, and ideals which are necessary for Christian living. We believe that education must develop the faculties and abilities of the whole child: spiritually, intellectually, physically, and emotionally. To help achieve this, our faculty and staff are an integral part of the formation of Christian community and dedicate themselves to the task of developing Christian citizens.

Listed below is a detailed description of the various three ways we work to meet our goals daily:

  • by professing faith,
  • taking advantage opportunities as they are presented to us,
  • and learning and modeling how to handle everyday challenges.

Faith

The religious atmosphere of our entire school program teaches fundamental Christian principles. Liturgical celebration and formal classes anchor our program.

Liturgical Celebration Mass is a public worship of God and the focus of our parish worshipping community. Students are taught about Mass and given the opportunity for participating at Masses appropriate to their grade level. Grade level and all school Masses are scheduled weekly and parents are always encouraged to attend. All school formal prayer services are scheduled during Advent and Lent and informal prayer services are held in classrooms. The sacraments of First Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist are administered in the fall and spring, respectively. The sacrament of Confirmation is administered in the spring to Eighth grade students.

Religion Classes Formal religion classes, the primary focus of all instruction, are held every day for all students. Religion permeates every facet of learning throughout the day. Basic instruction includes the study of Holy Scripture, the Mass, the Life of Christ, and the doctrines/ prayers of our Catholic faith as well as overall moral and Christian behavior.

Opportunity

St. Mary's offers many programs to enhance the education of our students. Our resource teacher is available full time to assist not only those who are struggling, but also those who need an even greater challenge than is offered in the classroom. The Band program is taught by a band teacher from Gross High School and is for children in fifth grade on up. The parish sports program offers basketball and volleyball. The Bellevue Junior Sports Association sponsors other sports teams and will put the children from St. Mary's on one team. We have offered a Challenge program some years and this year we are sponsoring a Math counts team. We also offer a counselor two days a week.

Challenge

Our program is one of only six Catholic schools in the Omaha metro area that is state accredited, and as of this winter, we have applied for North Central Association accreditation also. We offer a complete Curriculum:

  • Religion every day as a class and is included in all facets of life. A parish priest visits each class room every week. A Family Life Program is included in our religion curriculum.
  • Language Arts includes phonics and spelling.  We emphasize handwriting and vocabulary through the upper grades as well as grammar and composition. Reading is taught at every level.
  • Mathematics is an important part of the curriculum in every grade; special provision is made in the upper grades for basic math, pre-algebra, and algebra. The lessons include "hands on" activities, problem solving, computational skills, decision-making, and reasoning.
  • Computer instruction is given in every grade on a weekly basis with emphasis on proficiency or interdisciplinary applications and problem solving skills.
  • Science/Social Studies are taught in all grades emphasizing critical thinking and learning skills as they are presented through text instruction and the use of materials.
  • Physical Education/Fine Arts are taught on a twice-weekly basis. The whole child is important.
  • Library is also a class with a certified librarian who teaches library and research skills to all age levels.
  • Spanish is taught from Kindergarten through Eighth grade.
